But I’m not going to lie, it does take effort in the beginning to research and understand the kind of ingredients you want to avoid and minimize while still finding creative menu ideas that you, personally, find satisfying.
This is one reason why we love discovering new restaurants that serve delicious clean food and sharing that info with all of you! We come across so many great ideas from the chefs and skilled clean cooks out there that we can’t wait to try at home.
Being inspired and getting more creative in the kitchen becomes an important support system as you deepen your clean eating journey. But unless you grew up cooking, it can be pretty daunting to taste a dish and then discern how to whip up a version of it for yourself at home. This is why I love organic meal kit delivery as a tool to help any cook get more comfortable with their skills in the kitchen!
Yes, a ton of meal kit delivery services is tailored to being all about saving time. But there are a handful that truly offer all of us clean foodies out there an easy, time-saving way to eat clean and become more inspired and skillful in the kitchen. Here is the definitive list of the best clean eating food delivery services available today:
Sun Basket comes right out, and says it:
“Healthy meals should taste good first, and do good always. From our recyclable box to the pristine, organic produce and clean ingredients inside it, we create each Sun Basket with exceptional care. Because good food makes life better.”
Needless to say, Sun Basket has a firm grip on our Clean Foodie heartstrings. Unlike a lot of clean eating food delivery services that aren’t specific about what they mean when they say they’re “healthy”, Sun Basket goes into detail about the standards they’re committed to upholding in their ingredients selection.
All of the meats and poultry Sun Basket sources are antibiotic- and hormone-free, and they also work exclusively with ranchers and farmers who raise their animals responsibly and sustainably. Their lamb is pasture-raised, and their milk, yogurt, and eggs are organic. Plus, they often offer the option to order organic pasture-raised pork, beef, and poultry when available, and they only source wild-caught seafood.
Sun Basket lets you select a menu out of several different categories:
Paleo, Carb-Conscious, Gluten-Free, Lean & Clean, Diabetes-Friendly, Chef’s Choice, Vegetarian, Pescatarian, Mediterranean, and Quick & Easy.
You can also add breakfast and lunch options to your meal plan. They have made eating clean so easy, really fun and inspiring. Sun Basket’s founder and executive chef, Justine Kelly is an inspiration in her own right:
We highly recommend giving Sun Basket a try as your go-to clean eating food delivery company. Even accomplished home cooks can get stuck in a rut sometimes. Utilizing Sun Basket to do the ingredient research and leg-work for you is kind of a no-brainer and definitely a Clean Foodie win-win.

You can tell that the Clean Eating revolution is taking hold when there is actually more than one clean food delivery service to choose from! Green Chef is a USDA certified Organic company and takes the clean level of their ingredients seriously. They are also transparent about their environmental Green Practices. Here’s how they describe what they choose to put in each box for delivery:
They also pre-prep all of their ingredients, so if you aren’t great at julienning carrots, no worries. Green Chef is also similar to Sun Basket in that they offer different meal kit categories to choose from. Keep in mind, Green Chef does not offer as large a variety of meal plans as Sun Basket. While they do offer Keto, Paleo, Balanced Living, Plant-Powered, and Family Plans, if you are Gluten free or Diabetic, Sun Basket may be the better choice.
I really appreciate that Green Chef offers a family plan that provides portions for four people without having to order multiple plans at once. Granted, Sun Basket does allow you to get a 4 portion package in all of their organic meal kit plan categories.
Another feature I think Green Chef really gets right is that you can have your meal plan set up as weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly. This makes it easy to have fast, clean food at hand when you need them, but you’re also not getting bogged down with deliveries if you go out of town frequently. Green Chef also takes the “green” in their name seriously and offsets 100% of the carbon emissions associated with their business operations.
Green Chef is certainly a solid option when it comes to a clean eating meal delivery service that offers a nice variety of diet plans in an easy to make format.

Purple Carrot is an entirely plant-based vegan meal delivery service. So if you’re a Vegan or Vegetarian Clean Foodie, or you’re trying to really cut back on your meat consumption, then Purple Carrot may be a great option for you!
Here’s the kicker though: Purple Carrot is not able to give stats on what percentage of their ingredients are organic or non-GMO. They actually don’t say anything about trying to source clean ingredients on the prominent content of their site. Instead, I was only able to find where they addressed the issue in a reply to a FAQ query. Here’s what they said,
“We work with a variety of farmers and vendors across the country and strive to provide a consistent experience in each box. Most of our non-produce items are organic (Ex: beans, nut milks, tofu, tempeh, vegan cheeses and yogurts, etc) but due to constraints with sourcing, shipping locations, and our desire to provide unique ingredients and recipes, we are sometimes limited in our options for organic (and non-GMO) products”.
Please know, this is an important issue to us and we understand it is for you and many of our customers as well! We will continue to look into the avenues we could take to increase the number of organic products used in our kits!”
I totally appreciate that they’re trying, but if you’re a “Clean Foodie Expert Level” you may want to wait till Purple Carrot gets it together and puts even more priority on sourcing clean food ingredients.
That being said…
And for that, they get our top pick for the best vegan meal delivery service.
I think Purple Carrot would be a great way to kick off a new Vegan diet. You can learn some delicious ways to prepare plant-based vegan meals, and get more acquainted with excellent flavor combinations. Then, when you feel like you’ve beefed-up (sorry, no pun intended) your repertoire, you can start sourcing your own ingredients that you can guarantee are clean.
Instead of meal kit delivery, HungryRoot is more of an ingredient delivery service. You can still save time because everything is pre-prepped, but you control what you want to make and how you want to make it.
While HungryRoot does not guarantee that all of its ingredients are organic they do provide a really helpful list disclosing all of the items they deliver that are Organic, Non-GMO, and both. That kind of transparency definitely wins them some Clean Foodie points as a clean food delivery service.
Hungryroot allows customers to easily select if they want their box to be customized as either vegan, dairy-free, gluten-free, or nut-free, and they also send recipe recommendations for the ingredients included in your clean food delivery each week. You can build your own box, or let your Hungryroot personal shopper put together a box based on your preferences.
Hungryroot divides their ingredients into several categories:
Fresh Vegetables, Grains & Pastas, Proteins, Sauces & Dressings, Pantry, Ready-to-eat, and Sweets.
I think Hungryroot is ideal for all of you Clean Foodies who love salads, wraps and grain bowls, but who simply do not have time to prep endless amounts of ingredients and blend up unique sauces and dressings on the daily. I Also think Hungryroot is great for doing batch lunch preparation! For a more freestyle spin on a clean eating food delivery service, Hungryroot is an excellent option.
