South of North makes local sourcing of clean ingredients a priority. Much of the produce is organically grown or certified organic, and the beef is 100% grass-fed. You’ll also find local pasture-raised non-gmo meats, organic tofu and organically grown coffee options as well. Just about everything is made in house including their sauces, and other condiments.
South of North is a fusion eatery serving classic Vietnamese fare including Pho, Banh Mi, house-made Pot Stickers, Rice Bowls, Noodle Soups, Bao Buns, Summer Rolls, beer, saki, and wine.
What I Ordered
For starters, we ordered the Summer Rolls which were sticky skinned and stuffed with thin and moist rice noodles, curried chicken, a mango chutney, and greens with a hint of mint. The sweet chili vinegar dipping sauce was good enough to drink and a superb accompaniment to the fresh rolls of yum. Next, we ordered the Banh Mi Steamy Buns, a Noodle Soup with 100% grass-fed hanger steak, and the Chicken Cabbage Salad. The Steamy Buns were moist and packed with fresh flavorful toppings and a delightfully sweet sauce on the tender pork belly. Loved the dressing and chopped veggies piled high with diced pieces of chicken in the Chicken Cabbage. The Noodle Soup was simple with large slices of beef and thin rice noodles with some bean sprouts on the side to toss in. Similar to a traditional Pho but the beef taste was a bit strong in the broth for my liking. Overall a fantastic dining experience.
What a fun space with bursts of color at every corner. The building is newly built with lots of character such as the overhead garage doors and neon-lit bicycle on the wall. Wrap around bar seating and table seating is available inside with full open views of the kitchen. A few tables are provided outside under roof cover as well.
At South of North, the Chef/Owner takes great pride in his ingredients and kitchen creations, and it shows. The food is incredible, both in taste and quality, and clean. South of North is a step above the rest in every category, not to mention one of the very few places in Blue Ridge serving food made with a majority of clean ingredients.
