What’s Clean
Most of the ingredients are organic and just about everything is scratch-made, including the sauces. Some of the baked goods only have a few or no organic ingredients. The food is also gluten-free and soy-free. The juices are cold-pressed daily.
What’s Served
Gangster Vegan serves raw and cooked plant-based eats. The menu offers Burgers, Bowls, Salads, Desserts, and Cold Pressed Juices which are available in the grab & go case.
What I Ordered
I ordered the Notorius Toona and substituted beets for peppers. The sunflower seed-based Toona did resemble real tuna salad in taste and texture. However, the sauce was barely palatable and in the trash it went.
The Vibe
I’m going to be honest here, the place was pretty dirty and smelled really bad. There was an active leak in the ceiling around some ductwork. The glass door and windows were filthy with fingerprints and didn’t look like they’d been cleaned in a while, same for the checkout area and pin pad. What’s even more concerning is that I visited during Covid and one would think extra cleanliness would be practiced during this time. The space is furnished with small tables and simple furnishings. The staff was not friendly or knowledgable, in fact, was on the phone talking to a friend when I walked in and it took her a while to acknowledge me.
The Takeaway
I was not impressed at all with the Norristown Gangster Vegan location – the food, lack of cleanliness, or staff. After reading reviews of this place, I was expecting a whole lot more. They do use mostly organic ingredients and most things are scratch-made. They also have sister locations in Baltimore and Riverdale MD.
