What’s Clean

The pizza dough is made from organic wheat flour, the tomato sauce is organic, much of the produce is organic or local and organically grown. Many of the pizza toppings and salad ingredients are organic. Each location draws from their own pool of local farms and locally grown organic foods, including many of the beverages and beers.  The menu clearly identifies the toppings and ingredients that are organic. Vegan and gluten-free options are available, including GF pizza dough. Dairy-free flatbreads are offered as well.

What’s Served

The menu includes salad, wood-fired hand-tossed flatbread pizzas in red, white, vegan, dairy-free and GF varieties. You’ll also find flatbread specials of the day based on ingredients of the season. Specialty non-alcoholic refreshments such as Ginger Beer and Root beer floats will tempt you. Cold-brew, coffee, tea, craft sodas, and kombucha on tap are some of the beverage choices. The full liquor bar offers everything from local draught and IPA’s, to Gluten-free beer and cider, to a hefty wine list. Oh, and don’t forget the desserts, yum!

What I Ordered

Over the past 10 years, I’ve eaten at several Flatbread Company locations throughout New England and have always been pleased with the quality of ingredients, presentation, and delicious flatbreads. For today’s review, I customized a flatbread making one side a white pizza with house-made maple fennel sausage and organic mushrooms, and the other side a red pizza with organic tomato sauce, organic mushrooms, and natural uncured pepperoni. The organic crust was light and on the thinner side with the perfect amount of crispness and air-filled pockets along the ends. The combo of cheeses was not overdone, leaving room for the herbs and flavors to pop. Most notable was the freshness of the mushrooms and flavorful blend of herbs, an outstanding pizza it was. I just want to mention that I’ve sampled the gluten-free crust on many occasions and although not quite as airy and crispy as the traditional crust, it is definitely one of the better GF pizza crusts to date.

The Vibe

Every location I’ve visited has an earthy and downhome comfortable feel with tons of character, leaning towards the rustic side. The wood-fired hearth oven is usually in full view and it’s always entertaining to watch them fire up the flatbreads.

The Takeaway

Beginning in 1998, Flatbread Company now has 15 locations of which most are located in New England. Love the food and their mission; keeping it clean, integrity, and supporting local farms and farmers every chance they get. Drool-worthy real pizza made with real ingredients in a charming atmosphere…one of this Clean Foodie’s fave pizza stops in the US.
