What’s Clean
The sourcing of organic produce is primarily held to what is listed on the Dirty Dozen list by EWG, otherwise, for the most part, the produce is not organic, ask for more specifics. The chicken and eggs are organic and the majority of the seafood is wild-caught and fresh. The beef is 100% grass-fed. Several wines, liquors, and mocktail ingredients are organic as well.
What’s Served
At True Food Kitchen, the menu offers classic American fare with a healthy twist. Appetizer choices include Grilled Shrimp Lettuce Cups and Edamame Dumplings. A handful of pizzas along with interesting bowls such as Teriyaki Quinoa and Cashew Pad Thai are daily favorites. Sandwich options include a TLT made with smoked Tempeh, Grass-Fed Burgers, and an Inside Out Quinoa Burger. Some entrees to consider are the Lasagna Bolognese, Moroccan Chicken, and Grilled Fish Tacos, yum! You’ll also find unique mocktails, cocktails, and teas, as well as kombucha, beer, and wine.
What I Ordered
I’ve eaten several meals at True Food Kitchen locations across the country. For this review, I’ve chosen the Gluten-Free Tomato & Arugula Pizza, the Grass-Fed Burger, and a Pomegranate Chia Limeade which was to die for. The Pizza was decent but nothing to write home about. The texture of the crust was spot on with a slight crunch to the shell and a soft interior but unfortunately lacked flavor, as did the pizza overall. Sadly, the burger was much of the same. Although the caramelized onions and mushroom toppings were tasty and tender and the sweet potato browns and kale salad sides were enjoyable, the taste of the beef was a bit off and dry. On the list to sample at future visits are the Kale Guacamole, the Chopped Salad and Korean Noodle Salad, the Fennel Chicken Sausage Pizza, Cashew Pad Thai, the Turkey Burger, and the Grass-Fed Steak Tacos.
The Vibe
True Food Kitchen sports one of the nicest interiors around with stunning lighting and modern decor. The kitchen is open-air and the dining area is large which often results in a loud atmosphere, especially during busy times. Outdoor dining is available under umbrellas on the patio, complete with greenery and heaters when needed.
The Takeaway
True Food Kitchen in Houston boasts a stunning dining room with a lively atmosphere. Extra bonus points are given for their amazing mocktails and specialty drinks. Although not totally clean, True Food Kitchen is a safe bet as there are enough clean menu choices to choose from along with Vegan, Vegetarian, and Gluten-Free options.
