What’s Clean
At American Flatbread, locally grown and raised foods are a priority when sourcing ingredients. Many are organic or organically grown. The meats are from pasture-raised animals and the fennel sausage is made in-house. The dough is made daily from scratch with organic flour and baked in a wood-fired clay oven. Vegan and non-dairy cheese choices are available as well as a Gluten-Free crust.
What’s Served
American Flatbread serves artisanal flatbread pizzas, salads, soup, and a few desserts. Fresh squeezed lemonade and root beer on tap are some of the most popular beverage choices. Alcoholic drinks offered include local ciders, a few cocktails, and several handcrafted beers.
What I Ordered
Over the years I’ve eaten many different flatbreads and salads at the Burlington location but my fave picks are the New Vermont Sausage Flatbread and the Salad Special. The salad, comprised of mixed greens, beets, pickled onions, candied walnuts, chevre, and housemade maple balsamic vinaigrette is a nutrition-packed delicious combo of fresh ingredients. Always vibrant in color with crisp mixed greens and amazing pickled onions, while the real show stopper on this salad is the Maple Balsamic Vinaigrette. The flatbread however is why we have named American Flatbread “Best Pizza in Vermont!” The crust is superb, light and airy with a mildly crisp bottom and edges, topped with some of the best fennel pork sausage I’ve ever had. The combo of succulent sun-dried tomatoes, sweet caramelized onions, and fresh local mushrooms make for a flavor-packed pizza that will have you inhaling every bite without the ability to stop.
The Vibe
American Flatbread in Burlington is one of my favorite spots in the city. Brick walls, tin metal ceilings, and a handsome grand wooden bar add to the amazing charm of this old-world space with an earthy feel. Tables and booths are available indoors. The outdoor patio duplicates the same charm with fire pits in the center of tables, heat lamps, greenery, and lots of wooden accents.
The Takeaway
I’ve been eating at American Flatbread in Burlington since 2008 and have thoroughly enjoyed many different flatbreads and salads. Clean Foodie has named them “Best Pizza in Vermont” for not only their mouth-watering pizzas but also for the high-quality clean and local ingredients used, as well as their back to basics prep and cooking methods such as their wood-fired clay hearth. Bravo American Flatbread!
